Engineering overview

Liquid SO₂ production converts an SO₂-bearing gas into a controlled commercial product. The process must do more than cool the gas: moisture, oxygen, sulfur trioxide, acid mist and other impurities have to be managed before compression and condensation can be operated reliably.

SENC develops the route from the available SO₂ source and the required product specification. Purification, compression stages, intercooling, refrigeration, storage pressure and vent handling are integrated so that the liquefaction system matches both site utilities and the owner’s loading or downstream-use requirements.

SO₂ Source

Liquid SO₂ can be produced from dedicated sulfur combustion or from a suitable SO₂-rich process stream. The front end must establish gas strength, oxygen content, moisture and impurity limits before compression and condensation.

Liquefaction

The liquefaction system combines compression, intercooling and condensation at conditions selected from the required product temperature, available cooling utilities and storage pressure. Refrigeration is introduced where ambient cooling cannot meet the target.
